Dainese, E., 2015, “Great Mosque of Djenné” in Smarthistory, (Aug 9, 2015)
Abstract
As one of the wonders of Africa, and one of the most unique religious buildings in the world, the Great Mosque of Djenné, in present-day Mali, is also the greatest achievement of Sudano-Sahelian architecture. The work explores the history of the Mosque of Djenné, its materiality and present life within Mali.
The research in this essay has accumulated over a number of years, but this synthesis evolved in the course of a recent postdoctoral fellowship under the People Programme (Marie Curie Actions) of the European Union’s 7FP (FP/2007-2013, REA grant agreement n.327261), which I gratefully acknowledge.
